The Black Swan Summit 2026 in Perth was set in the beautiful UWA campus. It brought together visionary technology builders, industry partners, academics, investors and policy makers to discuss the future of society enabled by emerging technology such as Quantum and AI.
Rajiv Shah was part of a roundtable discussion on “How to Design Quantum Safe Systems”.
He raised the following key points in what was an engaging and informative discussion:
– PQC isn’t actually quantum technology, but something we can implement on today’s computers, which is a good thing!
– a risk management approach is vital; understand what the risk is, and which system are mot attractive to threat actors. There is actually no such thing as “Q-Day” – the threat will manifest gradually
– The threat timeline is uncertain, and the “harvest now, decrypt later” threat is more nuanced than people think; however it is certain the migration to PQC will take longer and be more difficult than you think, so now is the time to start assessing risk and planning
– NIST standards are ready to implement and we need to start; but they may not be final word, so crypto-agility is also important to think about in case future changes are needed
